Working with Companies you Dislike

At the centre of many of the world’s religions is forgiveness. Not only is this considered a necessity to become a better person it has proven healing qualities. It is quite easy to forgive people, some people struggle with this. What happens though if it is not a case of forgiveness but that is just the way the person or company is. Of course there are things out there that we just do not like. I am sure for each person this is different. It is really only of interest if we want to do business with that company or person. One can stand firm on their ground of principles and lose the business. Or they can gain the business grow, their company and make a contribution to their principles or ethics in another way.

People can change….. it’s just not very likely to happen.

I personally keep the door slightly ajar never rule out an opportunity.

Grey areas need Procedures

A grey area could be described as something you’re not quite sure about..Where should you be stepping? Grey areas appear in everyday life in all the work that we do. Obviously it is important they are kept to a minimum.  Because of their very nature we are sometimes never sure when we are hitting one, even more important what can one do about them? Well one method I tried was to ignore it and hope that is goes away, that turned out to be useless. A slightly more successful method was sitting down andfinding a solution that happened in this case to involve people and writing a procedure. But the principle is same. Making a procedure is a back up plan. And that is good for grey areas.

PRESS RELEASE

News release: 26-03-07

A new online community, Work Connexions has been launched in the Isle of Man. Leo Cussons and Nathan Pledger have been working the past six months on developing a platform that combines the principles of the blogosphere, the Yellow Pages, eBay and ManxForums.

What makes Work Connexions different is the Requests and Offer sections. In Requests, you can post your recruitment adverts, requests for proposals and other invitations. In Offers you can post an advert of your own…maintenance services, hair dressers and travel agents all feature. Then once you’ve used the services or worked for a new customer, you can write a review on how it went. So if I hire a mechanic to fix my car, he knows I’m going to let the world know what value I got.

Life Changes and Develops

Often in life, and more than people would like to admit it, relationships change.

People disagree and things that once blossomed, wither and die, and other things develop. Sometimes it is possible to revive these things and sometimes it is not. It is a part of lifes cycles.

We can make things easier for ourselves or we can make them difficult. How simple it all is and yet how difficult we make it.

An acquaintance once told me that the secret to running a business is insuring that you make more right decisions then wrong ones.

7 steps for an optimal computer system

1.            First back up all your important data on to a separate partition/hard drive (emails docs etc)

2.            Do a clean install of your OS from the install cd

3.            Disable any computer virus programs ( this is controversial but all virus software by definition only works for known computer virus so you are no safer from a threat then if you did not have it. Providing your system is clean of course)

4.            Install any other software needed, Printer drivers, Photoshop etc

5.            Test it for a couple days and make sure you are happy

6.            Make a ghost image or copy of this partition using any of the following  software, partition magic, Norton ghost, Acronis, shareware etc

7.            Use your computer…

What you will have created is a system that allows you at any given moment to return your computer to its optimal state from the restore. So long as your files are kept safe on a separate hard drive or partition and you make a regular backup you should be fine.

Web 2.0 Business and Product Development

The number of adverts that I see for a business development manager, or a relationship manager in the papers and on job boards I find to be amazing. It would seem that every company has something to develop; even my local butchers spent half an hour telling me how there has been no free range chickens sold in this area for the last 20 years. Now he may be right, but it does not solve my problem. I tend to eat very little meat nowadays as it is so damn hard to tell where it came from, how was it kept, what it was feed etc… Was it allowed to wander around outside? Has it been properly hung etc? Of all the businesses, that I can think of my butchers would do very well with some product development.

I cannot think of any reason at all why do not think for the life of me that our butchers is going to employ a thirtyish looking business developer, dressed in a suit to explain his products to the customer. This is something the head chopper feels he can do perfectly well. How much more custom would he get? At presently he is the only butchers in the village… Developing a relationship with your customers is difficult, especially in a highly competitive world as the one we live in, where every corner you turn there is somebody ready to quote a better price, do it faster, guarantee for it longer.

Why would anybody want to employ somebody just to go and talk to potential customers? Well the truth is they may not want to just that. But if there was that golden touch business developer who could go out and bring back the golden eggs, with the use of his or her persuasion, then you have got a foot in the door and you would have been able to open the box to much greater business and all for less than 40,000 a year. Surly though, the true role of a business developer will always remain with the MD. You may have many skills in your organisation , from people that can program computers underwater, to scientist who know how to calculate rockets landing on the moon but if you cannot get the money to pay you staff, you will all have go home.

It is possible that business developers have the most to lose from Web 2.0. as their means to and end is generally undefined. Imagine having something tangible for a process for business development. Web 2.0 can document that process. Not just for one customer but for all customers providing a backup and a status report, from the start of a product, to customer interest, to selling products, to customer feedback.
