Challenge Your Brain for Productivity – 5 MITA Steps

Chris Brown asked, “How do you get more productive with your creativity or stay productive and creative?”

My immediate answer’s quite simple… Challenge your brain because the brain leaps to the adventure of unraveling puzzles and problems.

When folks mine rich resources of their brain to solve problems they’ll be more productive! How so? They use more gifts and talents at work. Why then, doesn’t that happen more?

Interestingly, one barrier is bosses or CEO’s who see themselves as boosting productivity, while in reality they stifle job satisfaction. Misplaced efforts to improve worker morale tend to lessen productivity according to research at University of Michigan. The secret is to empower peoples’ gifts and talents.

Amazingly, MITA strategies worked to increase my personal productivity in ways that changed who I am. Here’s a brief overview with links to provide deeper insights for the five MITA steps that jumpstarted my brain and led to productivity in career and more satisfaction in personal life as well…

Question… Ask questions that connect you personally to problems. That process guides your brain to solutions or new opportunities. Such questions might begin “What if I…” “How might I change…” “What would happen if I tried…” You get the picture.

TargetMake a plan that initiates solutions or strategies for the outcome you have in sight. I began to work smarter and not harder by using short term benchmarks and jotting them in my weekly calendar so I kept progressing toward the overall target.

ExpectWhat do you expect anyway? Your expectations must be clear and not foggy or nothing gets done. I wrote down exact descriptions for best end results. Do you seek excellence as I do?

Move What personal resources contribute to the target you have in mind? Most people automatically dip into one or two intelligences used on the job. Some leaders compartmentalize gifts and talents used at work. For instance they use verbal and logical intelligences to tackle tasks day in and day out, so they miss seeing a project through bodily-kinesthetic or interpersonal lenses. To look at your job differently is often to draw on new talents. When you tap into new intelligences to tackle old projects, watch for rejuvenated results!

ReflectReflection leads to growth and change that steps you back to see what’s working and what isn’t. That leads to adjustment opportunities along the way. Without reflection, each new flight you take traverses the same path and engages the same components. Ellen Weber, who created the MITA model, claims if reflection is left out, stagnation results. How does reflection guide your productivity?

Many folks want research evidence to know that MITA strategies work. Recently, PhD University lecturers in Ireland, began using MITA strategies as they taught and assessed university students in medical settings. Research conducted in 2006 showed that professors using MITA strategies had 5% increase in student motivation and achievement. Similar results hold true in business settings.

Whether blogging, writing articles, having fun with grandchildren, or keynoting to university faculty, I discovered MITA strategies bring productivity in all facets of my life.

Here’s Ben’s guidelines to enter:

Write a post on your best productivity tips.

1. Challenge yourself by picking your single best productivity tip (although this isn’t a requirement; you can give us more if you want!)

2. Include links to other people that have written posts, or include their tips in your post with proper attribution. And be sure to tag me at Brain Based Biz.

Note: Ben’s not asking that you link to everyone in the group writing project meme; pick the ones you want to connect with. You certainly can link to everyone, but it’s not a requirement. Ben likes leaving more decision making power in your hands so this isn’t just a link grab, but you’re thinking about what your audience & community wants to read about.

A link back to Ben’s post is appreciated though, to help spread the word!

3. If you use Technorati Tags then tag your post “ultimate guide to productivity”.

4. Tag others in your post to spread the meme. Tag as many people as you like!

5. If you link back to Instigator Blog Ben’ll make sure to include at least 2 links back to you. But this isn’t a requirement, it just helps him keep track of what’s going on. And be sure to tag me at Brain Based Biz.

The question “What guides my productivity” was a fun challenge, Chris. Thanks! Now it will be interesting to see how the folks I’ve tagged add to Ben’s big pot! And, if you’d like this challenge, too, just jump in!

Pay To Read Subscribed Blogging

There is a very interesting post on Shoemoney about 1938media who are going to start a subscription service. He accepts thatt 99 percent of his visitors will not pay for the content. I think he is on to something. At least 75 percent of my reading material comes from blogs on the Internet. I do not buy a newspaper because I find bloggers more interesting and better content. I would be interested in paying a dollar per a day to read my favourite bloggers.

A Blogging Carnival Be Featured

A Blogging carnival is a world web phenomena where bloggers that are doing interesting or exceptional blogging can get free publicity within their own work sphere. It is similar to a magazine, in that it is dedicated to a particular topic, and is published on a regular schedule, often weekly or monthly. Each edition of a blog carnival is in the form of a blog article that contains permalinks links to other blog articles on a particular topic. If you would like to participate in the next Work Connexions blog carnival or synchroblog

If you would like to participate in the next Work Connexions blog carnival or synchroblog (Synchronised Blogging, or synchroblog, where a group of bloggers agree to post on their own blogs on the same broad topic on the same day.) then drop us an email or leave a comment in the blog entry of this news.

Offline/Online Which Profile are you?

I was surfing the internet this evening and it struck me how bloggers can give an entirely different image about themselves than what they really are. For example just recently a couple of blogs have been sold for $10,000. While it is nice pocket money, you are not going to be able to retire on it. Is the buyer buying a page rank or the personality. The other side of the coin is there are bloggers out there who have photos of themselves in big expensive cars on their blog with the promise of blog like me and you too can live like me. While the reality is they are probably scratching a living. Still it is better than mugging old ladies.

There is of course another kind of blogger who is totally nuts but their blog is very plain. I do wonder about interacting in this way what are the benefits and what are the pitfalls? If we keep it all in perspective I would not do business with somebody solely on their blog. Which is why executives still travel the globe. Face to face is the still the most trusted way to get business done. As I search the internet I wonder what blogs are telling us about their owners? and what are their reasons for blogging. For me personally it is a development tool.

Are you unsure about blogging?

There is some talk that a lot of professional people feel threatened by blogging, because they feel they are giving away their hard earned knowledge for free. There is some truth in this argument. However given the open style of blogging and that there are no hard and fast rules as to how one should blog the choice is very much yours as to how you do it. The only rule that counts if one is going to blog, it has to be interesting. Here is non conclusive number of styles one can use:

1. Blog about changes industry practise- Demonstrates that the company is watching current trends

2. Blog about personal development – shows that you are keeping up to date in your field

3. Blog about your experiences – Shows that you know what you are talking about

4. Blog about News events – Gives an insight into your personal opinions and thoughts

For professionals that do decide to take the plunge the marketing gains are significant not just in search engine results and online media, but in providing your own marketing information. Which this can be reused and edited at a later stage for different campaigns. With big companies like Sony encouraging their executives to do it, how long can you wait?

Inferno Buying The Blog Research Launch

“86% of businesses with a blog credit blogs with generating more business opportunities”

From Inferno Communications:

86% of businesses with a blog credit blogs with generating more business opportunities A significant new survey is released today showing that blogging is becoming a key business tool, providing a valuable way for companies to create new and genuine relationships with their customers. The research, carried out for UK PR agency Inferno Communications by Loudhouse Research during August 2007, polled 300 UK companies with over 250 employees. It reveals that 50% of those companies surveyed now undertake some form of blogging – either having their own blog or encouraging employees to comment on blogs.

Of those companies that do have blogs, 64% were launched in the last 6 months. And 86% of these blogging companies state that their blog has generated additional business opportunities. Blogs also compare well to other forms of business information, ranking with business decision makers as equally important as trade shows and internet searching, and more influential than TV and radio advertising.

The research questioned UK managers with direct sales and/or purchasing responsibility to discover how they and their companies use blogs to interact with existing and potential customers and how they engage with the blogosphere to inform their own business decision making. The main findings of the research found:

· 50% of UK companies now undertake some form of blogging

· 64% of UK corporate blogs have been launched in the last 6 months

· 86% of companies that have a blog credit it with generating more business opportunities for their company

· 66% of managers in the survey have visited blogs in the last 12 months

· 80% of blog users visit blogs during working hours

· 33% of blog visitors will access a blog on a daily basis

“The research shows that blogging in the UK is fast becoming a serious business tool,” Grant Currie, Managing Director of Inferno PR commented. “There are many parallels with ‘Internet 1.0’ in that there has been a lot of hype and questions asked about ‘Web 2.0’ technologies and mistakes are being made. But the fact remains that it appears blogging is one of the Web 2.0 technologies that is now taking serious hold in the business world. UK companies are now beginning to adopt blogging as part of their business strategy and those that have done so are pointing to specific business success and opportunity being created. It seems the hype is over and the real business of blogging is on its way.”

Currie also cautioned businesses to understand what is and isn’t achievable in the “blogosphere”before developing their own blogging strategies. He said, “Businesses shouldn’t view a blog as another billboard from which to shout their corporate messages. Starting a blog is essentially starting a conversation and as in verbal communication, conversations have conventions, rules and boundaries. Those businesses in our survey who have derived new business opportunities from their blogs, will have found that these successes came indirectly from the blog, rather than directly. A blog is not the place to sell and businesses should get suitable advice before embarking on their blogs.”

Prominent UK blogger, Neville Hobson, author of the Hobson Report echoes these thoughts, saying: “A business blog is a powerful communication tool, as many companies who successfully use them can attest. Blogs also represent disruptive change and a challenge to traditional business thinking. Companies who recognize the social characteristics of effective communication are those likely to gain the most from business blogging.”

The research also cautions businesses looking to exploit the blogosphere revealing significant difference in opinion between buyers and sellers over what constitutes a ‘good blog’. For instance, only 30% of respondents felt that corporate branding was a positive thing raising questions over the validity of trumpeting the company line on a blog versus allowing individual views to flourish. Furthermore, those respondents with spending responsibilities saw blogs as the second best source for informing a business
decision (behind industry reports), while those with selling responsibilities saw blogs as the least favourable source (behind industry reports, trade press and trade events).
