Internet TV Now this is Choice

It does not surprise me that ITunes is becoming so popular, but not for music instead it is being used by high school students in America for TV:  article here.

I must admit that if I think about I get almost all my TV media from the internet.

The BBC provides an excellent service as does channel four. Then there all the RSS feeds that provide enough content in reading, video, and sound. In fact the audio feeds from Mike Southon are very interesting for sales training.

Nearer to home we have a our own Local Long Tale TV who are really showing us the future http://www.longtaletv.com along with several American startups.

Finding calm in the work place

How many of us take the time to make our surroundings how we want them to be. How many managers actually take the time to see what effect different work places has on the employees. A few years ago I spent some time looking at feng shue. I was convinced that while I was studying the art of energy flow that it would do wonders for my career and home life. I was wrong. Afterwards I viewed Feng Shui suspiciously, but as usual what comes round goes around and I do think making your office your sanctum is important it is your space. Here are some tips,

Your computer can be customized in just about every way possible. Some examples; text read out, size of fonts, colour of applications, dictation the list is endless spend some time to insure that you have your computer doing its job, otherwise you will have to sack it (no slackers tolerated)

Make sure that you are comfortable in your chair and it is at the right height.

Make sure your screen is also at the right height. ( I realise while I am writing this that mine is not at eye level)

Make sure your paper files are ordered and correct in a way that you can understand.

Have something on your desk that makes you smile, A photograph, a silly postcard etc.

Have something on your desk that reminds you of your reason for doing what you do. ( I use three point triangle representing energy flows and a self made fish from my son)

The most important thing to remember is to have some fun, so if you need a break take a break, if you need to sit back and do nothing then do that, your brain is still working and probably more when you are not physically working.

The Family Business, Learning from Family

The skills one learns in family are directly transferable to a lot of situations in life.

In family general speaking we will go the extra mile.

Sometimes we are not exactly sure why we do this. For example we will make unsecured loans, give advice, arrange any number of things. The basis for this is that we have known our family members for a long period time.

While we may trust them or not. We know what to expect. This is built on trust over a long period time and many different situations. If one was to put it simply we know our family better then any one.

What has this do with business? Getting to know your employees, how important is this? Some might say that it is just a Job. X amount of hours per a day, does corretly describe a job. For a successful company they can not offer just jobs.

They have to offer more. Ideally a career or at best a vocation. If one is to do this they will have to understand there employees.

This is a great skill. Understanding your resources, It is management but not in a traditional sense. It is more listen and and then pairing the right work with the right employee. All these skills can be learnt in the standard family model which is way running a department is so much more then just allocating work or pieces of paper.

The Biggest Problems are Solved by the Simplest Solutions

We have to day been working on a printer problem. we needed to replace quite a bit of the electronics.

The only problem was we could not gain access to the part we needed. After searching on the internet brought no results.

We turned the device upside down and where able to locate a spring key which removed the undercarraige. allowing us access the part and solve the problem.

Hence the biggest problems are solved by the simplest solutions. I like that motto….

Managing Stress at Work

Stress is killer it turns good people into bad people, and bad people into monsters.

There are many sorts of stress, stress getting on with people. Family life stress, partner stress to name but a few and to top it all off no stress at all is not good for us.

So how does one keep the balance? The first step is being aware of it…..
Once you have done that you can start to work on other techniques to mange your stress and maintain a balance.

There are a lot of people who  have no idea about the stress they feel every day, unfortunately is is not possible to tell them  as stress stops proper communication. A catch 22.
